Selling into Romania

Romania is the fifth largest market for Turkish furniture: $204m in 2025, 4% of the total and 1% below 2024, on the Ministry of Trade’s figures. The trade runs both ways and the return leg is growing: Türkiye imported $48m of furniture from Romania in 2025, up 46%, which makes Romania its sixth largest source. Seating and parts (HS 9401) were $99.4m of Turkish exports to Romania, out of $8.57bn of goods in all.

Most of it moves by road. Romania was the third largest destination for Türkiye’s road exports in 2025 at $5.24bn, after Germany and Iraq. The Black Sea Ro-Ro link has been hard to keep running. Ro-Ro lines from Karasu and İzmir to Constanța are on the 2025 list; Karasu–Constanța restarted on 14 May 2025 with three sailings a week for 100 lorries each, and then stopped again after technical problems. Earlier attempts closed for reasons the ministry lists plainly: port charges, no customs point dedicated to Ro-Ro at Constanța, and X-ray and physical checks on every vehicle.

There is no customs duty. Romania is inside the EU, and the customs union has removed duties on industrial goods since 1 January 1996; the paperwork is the same as for Germany or France, set out at germany. Labels for goods sold in Romania must be in Romanian. The rest is the EU rulebook: the responsible person under GPSR at gpsr, the deforestation regulation at eudr, the formaldehyde limit at eu formaldehyde, and the EU packaging regulation, applying since 12 August 2026. One date to watch: the EU’s 2025–2030 ecodesign work programme schedules product rules for furniture in 2028 and mattresses in 2029, with an 18-month transition expected after each.
