Selling into Germany

Germany is the second largest market for Turkish furniture and has been steady rather than growing. The Ministry of Trade puts 2025 exports to Germany at $495m, 11% of a $4,583m total, against $496m in 2024. Across all markets the two biggest product groups are 9403, other furniture and parts, at $2,321m, and 9401, seating and parts, at $1,775m. Germany is also the single largest destination for Turkish road freight of every kind, at $11.2bn in 2025.

Most of it arrives by lorry. Road carried 31.9% of Türkiye’s exports in 2025, and chapter 94 — furniture, bedding, lighting and prefabricated buildings — was the ninth largest road export group at about $3.0bn. The land route into the EU runs through one of three Bulgarian gates: Kapıkule, Hamzabeyli or Dereköy. The alternative is Ro-Ro across the Adriatic and then road: Trieste took sailings from Tuzla (Pendik), Çeşme, Mersin, Ambarlı, Yalova and Tekirdağ in 2025, and Europe accounted for 522,717 of the 724,726 vehicles moved by Ro-Ro that year.

There is no customs duty. The customs union was completed on 1 January 1996 by Association Council Decision No 1/95 and covers industrial goods; agriculture and coal and steel sit outside it under separate agreements, which is why furniture is inside. The document that carries the goods is the A.TR movement certificate, issued and endorsed by customs. Read what it is carefully: an A.TR is evidence that goods are in free circulation in the customs union. It is not evidence of origin, and a buyer who has to prove Turkish origin later — for a re-export, or for a preference under a different agreement — needs origin documents instead.

The rules that do apply are product rules, and they are on our compliance pages: the responsible person the EU requires under GPSR at gpsr, the deforestation regulation that reaches furniture from 30 December 2026 at eudr, the formaldehyde limit at eu formaldehyde, and why CE marking answers none of it at ce marking and furniture. Germany adds packaging. Since 12 August 2026 the EU packaging regulation and the German Verpackungsdurchführungsgesetz have replaced the old Verpackungsgesetz, and a company based abroad with no German branch that sells packaged goods directly to end consumers in Germany must now appoint an authorised representative, where before it could choose to. Transport and service packaging can carry obligations even when empty. On a normal trade order the German buyer registers, but who registers is worth writing into the order rather than discovering at the first delivery.
