Selling into France

France took $254m of Turkish furniture in 2025, 6% of the total and 3% above 2024, which makes it the fourth largest market. It runs in both directions and the return leg is growing faster: Türkiye imported $66m of furniture from France in 2025, up 81% on the year, and France is now the fifth largest source of Türkiye’s own furniture imports.

France is the one large European market with a real sea option. Ro-Ro sailings from Yalova, İzmir and Tekirdağ to Sète, and from Gemlik to Marseille, ran in 2025, alongside Kocaeli to Antwerp and Barcelona. The alternative is the same lorry route as Germany, out through Kapıkule, Hamzabeyli or Dereköy. On duty there is nothing to pay: industrial goods have moved free of customs duty since the customs union was completed on 1 January 1996, and the A.TR movement certificate carries the free-circulation status.

What France adds is producer responsibility, and it has applied to furniture longer than most people expect — since December 2012, under Article L541-10-1 of the Code de l’environnement with Articles R543-240 to R543-256-1. Three eco-organismes are approved for the stream: Ecomaison, Valdelia and Valobat. Every producer inside a scheme must hold an identifiant unique, the IDU, issued by ADEME through the SYDEREP register. The IDU has to appear in the producer’s general terms and conditions of sale under Article R. 541-173, and must be given to a buyer who asks for it under Article L. 541-10-10. Asking a French supplier or importer for its IDU is a two-minute check that the chain is registered.

The change to know about is very recent. Article L541-10-9-1 of the Code de l’environnement, created by Loi n° 2026-602 of 8 July 2026 and in force since 10 July 2026, requires any person not established in France who is subject to extended producer responsibility to appoint, by written mandate, a mandataire established in France. Paying an eco-contribution through somebody else is no longer the whole answer. On top of that sit the EU rules, and our pages set them out: the responsible person under GPSR at gpsr, the deforestation regulation from 30 December 2026 at eudr, the formaldehyde limit at eu formaldehyde, and CE marking at ce marking and furniture. The EU packaging regulation has applied since 12 August 2026 as well.
