There is no CE mark for a chair, and offering one is a warning sign

Ask ten suppliers for European paperwork and some will send a CE certificate for a wooden bed. It looks like the answer. It is the opposite: putting a CE mark on a product that is not covered by the rules behind it is not allowed.

What the Commission actually says

Not all products must have CE marking. It is compulsory only for most of the products covered by the New Approach Directives. It is forbidden to affix CE marking to other products.

European Commission, CE marking

Two sentences, two facts. The mark belongs to a defined set of product law. Outside that set it is not optional and not harmless — it is forbidden.

The same page kills the other half of the misunderstanding.

Please note that a CE marking does not indicate that a product have been approved as safe by the EU or by another authority. It does not indicate the origin of a product either.

European Commission, CE marking

So even where the mark is right, it is not a safety approval and not a statement of origin. It is the maker declaring that a particular body of law has been met.

Why furniture is outside it

The EU writes product law by category: toys, machinery, electrical equipment, pressure vessels, lifts. A wooden chair is in none of those categories, so there is no directive for a chair to conform to, and nothing for a mark to declare. The absence is the design, not a gap somebody forgot to fill.

That does not leave furniture unregulated. It leaves it under different instruments — ones with no mark attached. The General Product Safety Regulation reaches it. The formaldehyde limit in REACH reaches it. The deforestation regulation reaches it. None of the three produces a mark on the leg of a chair, and none of them can be answered with a certificate bought for one.

Where CE does attach in a furniture order

Through the parts that are not furniture. A lit mirror, a bed with a powered mechanism, a desk with sockets in it, a bedside lamp: the electrical assembly inside them falls under electrical product law, and the mark belongs to that assembly. The timber around it does not acquire one by proximity.

So a CE declaration in a hotel order is credible when it names the powered component and the law it was assessed against, and not credible when it names a wardrobe.

How to read a certificate you have been sent

A supplier who answers “we are CE certified” to a question about upholstery behaviour has not answered it. That is not always dishonesty. In a trade where every foreign buyer asks for certificates, a factory learns to produce something certificate-shaped.

Where this could bite2,050

Of the seven product groups in this index, one is where a CE question is a real question rather than a red flag.

2,050 of the 8,923 firms are in lighting and electrical. A firm can carry several groups, so this overlaps the others. It is the group where an order can contain a part that genuinely needs a declaration — and where a buyer should ask for one about the powered component by name.

The wired trade, exporting to the EU1,119

CE is a mark for the European Economic Area, so the cut that matters here is the wired trade crossed with EU trade. 1,119 lighting and electrical firms export to at least one EU market; 228 of them have a company page. This is the short answer to “where could a CE question be a real question?”

A starting point for the question, not a list of CE-marked products.

891 more firms in this cut appear on the destination pages. The whole group is here.
