The US wood tariff, the rate it is at, and the date it moves

A hotel headboard and a run of vanity units going from Türkiye to the United States are taxed under a national-security measure, not a trade one. The rate has been 25% since October 2025. It was due to rise on 1 January 2026 and did not. It is now due to rise on 1 January 2027.

The rates, as written

Proclamation 10976 of 29 September 2025 set three rates. The wording matters, because two of them read like furniture and one does not.

Clause 5 gave the start: the duties apply to goods entered for consumption on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on 14 October 2025. It also said the tariffs are on top of everything else already payable.

The step that moved a year

As first written, clause 5 raised the rates on 1 January 2026. Proclamation 11000 of 31 December 2025 rewrote that clause the day before it was due to take effect.

Effective January 1, 2027, the duty rate in clause 2 shall increase to 30 percent and the duty rate in clause 3 shall increase to 50 percent, and shall continue in effect, except for countries with which the United States reaches an agreement that addresses the threatened impairment of the national security posed by imports of wood products.

Proclamation 11000, clause 1, amending clause 5 of Proclamation 10976

The same proclamation says in plain words what those clause numbers mean: the rate for upholstered furniture goes from 25% to 30%, and the rate for kitchen cabinets and vanities goes from 25% to 50%. The reason given is that negotiations with several countries were still running.

The exception

The step does not apply to countries that reach an agreement with the United States. Some ceilings are already written into Proclamation 10976 itself. The tariff on wood products from the United Kingdom shall not exceed 10%. For the European Union and Japan, the tariff plus the ordinary duty rate shall not exceed 15%.

Türkiye is not named in either proclamation. If you are pricing 2027 delivery, whether Türkiye reaches an agreement of this kind is the fact to check — and to write into the contract either way.

What this asks of a supplier

Nothing. There is no certificate, no test and no label. The importer of record pays, at entry, on the customs value. A Turkish factory is not asked for a document by this measure.

What it changes is the conversation. A 25% duty is already inside every US quotation now, and a quote given today for delivery after New Year 2027 is a quote across a rate change. Who carries a change of that size is a contract term, and it is worth settling in the order rather than in an email eighteen months later.

Who this reaches1,056

1,056 of the 8,923 Turkish exporters in this index sell to the United States, and 217 of those have a page here. Their US orders are being priced across this measure.

The middle two are the interesting ones. The UK has its own ceiling written into the same proclamation, so a firm selling into both markets sits on two different sides of one American measure. All 1,056 US exporters are listed here, and the UK exporters here.

Exporting to both the UK and the US125

398 firms sell into both; 125 of them have a company page. These are the firms to look at when one supplier has to cover both sides of the Atlantic.

The other 273 are listed on the US destination page.
