What is actually made here

Ümraniye is one of the better-documented industrial districts in İstanbul, because its own district governorship publishes the numbers. Dudullu Organize Sanayi Bölgesi covers 265 hectares across 296 parcels, with 145 factories in production employing 15,287 people. Alongside the zone the district holds twelve industrial sites with 5,360 workplaces between them, 4,290 of those active, employing 24,336 people. Furniture is named first in the governorship’s own list of the district’s sectors, ahead of vehicle parts, textiles and telecommunications.

MODOKO is one of those twelve sites, and the scale is worth having in front of you. On the governorship’s figures MODOKO holds 285 workplaces, 244 of them active, employing about 1,450 people. Its own strapline is “Mobilyanın Başkenti”, the capital of furniture, immediately qualified on the same page by “Yüzlerce Mağaza, Binlerce Ürün” — hundreds of shops, thousands of products. It also calls itself Türkiye’s largest furniture e-commerce site. The address is Yukarı Dudullu, Ümraniye.

Two hundred and eighty-five workplaces is a large retail site and a small industrial one. The Ministry of Trade puts MODOKO in the same category as MASKO: an extensive furniture trade complex, listed separately from the production centres. Read it as a place where furniture is sold. Where a given piece is made is a separate question, and it is one the district can sometimes answer, because the factories are here too.

So a registered Ümraniye address can be three quite different things: a factory inside the Dudullu zone, a workshop in one of the industrial sites, or a shop in MODOKO. The district data does not distinguish them and neither does a company registration. It is the first question to put to a supplier here, and the answer changes what a sample means.
